INITIATIVES -
in York and nationally:
We
are
a
weekly
café
that
serves
meals
sourced
from
surplus
food
destined
for
landfill.
The
café
provides
a
place
for
the
community
to
come
together,
make
friends
and
tackle
the
issue
of
food
waste
on
a
local
level.
It
is
run
completely
by
our
passionate
volunteers
and
works
on
a
pay-as-you-feel
basis.
In
the
month
of
February
2018,
with
your
help,
we
saved
a
whopping
555kg
of
food
waste.
We
want
to
say
a
big
Thank
You
to
everyone
who
made
it possible by preparing, collecting food and attending the cafe. Together we’re tackling food waste!
Chill
in
the
Community
CIC
group
first
opened
its
doors
in
2017
in
the
Acomb
area
of
York.
Formerly
a
hair
&
beauty
salon,
Chill
in
the
Community
CIC
is
a
unique
project;
an
informal
café
setting
where
customers
can
grab
a
freshly
made
panini,
homemade
cake
or
locally
sourced
coffee
whilst
others
can,
in
the
very
same
building,
access
a
free food bank, youth drop in, toddler groups, craft activities & various other community based schemes.

Food
Circle
aims
to
create
a
better
food
system,
one
which
works
for
the
benefit
of
all. We want to….
1
.
Empower the urban community.
Access to ingredients, tools and knowledge.
2
.
Support
and
invest
in
our
sustainable
farm
heroes.
Reduce
agricultural
waste
and
reinvest
in
better
farming
practises.
3
.
Encourage
people
to
VALUE
OUR
FOOD.
Take
time
to
buy,
prepare
and
enjoy.
To
value
the
ingredients
and
preserve the seasons.
Little
Bites
Cookery
school
is
for
2.5
yrs
upwards.
Our
vision
is
'making
nutrition
fun'.
Our
aim
is
to
promote
healthier
cooking and eating for parents and children.
We
run
pre-school
classes
for
2.5
-
5
yrs
weekly
in
nurseries
across
York.
Children
are
taught
simple
nutritious
recipes
that
are
both
fun
and
educational
to
gain
familiarity
of
ingredients
whilst
engaging
them
in
cooking.
The
classes
involve
making
a
simple
recipe.
Recipes
alternate
each
week
(sweet
and
savoury),
ensuring
a
balance
of
nutritious
ingredients
and
seasonality
where
possible.
All
ingredients
are
talked
about
together
before
starting
the
recipe.
This
includes
smelling,
touching
and
sometimes
tasting.
They
also
do
a
food
related
activity
such
as
drawing
food
ingredients and counting ingredients to complement the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
We
also
run
classes
for
older
children
up
to
11
yrs
-
classes
are
similar
to
preschool
but
emphasis
is
more
on
cooking
skills and working more independently.
We
also
deliver
nutrition
workshops
alongside
cookery
which
can
be
bespoke
to
fit
in
with
nursery
or
school
requirements such as looking after your body or healthy eating messages.
